it’s route memorization without doing this this way I mean people can explain the answer but they have difficulty explaining why it’s true or the intuition… all they’re doing is breaking the numbers down into smaller units of representation to make it easier and it’s supposed to help people think of math not as literals but abstractly so that say when you find yourself in a real world situation that calls for math like say You’re a Cashier and the customer Rings up at 57.55 and Hands you a 100 dollar bill in your head the register is going to spit out FOR You that it’s 42.45 in change and to get there you have to break the 42.45 apart. so two twenties = 40 + 2 one dollar bills = 42. + a quarter 42.25 + two dimes = 42.45.

Ah yes, the issue of the banality of evil. Most everyone from Hitler to Pol Pot to George W most likely all thought what they were doing was for the better “good.” It was evil, but they did it because they recognized it as achieving good.

As far as people who purposely act “bad,” which is to say not someone who has a radical moral code, but someone who willingly breaks their own moral code of what is “bad” BECAUSE it is bad, most likely some individuals who have legit Antisocial Personality Disorder. This would cover most serial killers and other extreme harmful antisocial behaviors

People hated the New Math irrationally, too. People just fear change and fear not understanding their second graders’ homework. It’s one of the reasons we have so much trouble making real improvements in our educational system. “The way we did it in my day worked fine for me! Of course math is hard and I hate it, so does everyone! It should be hard, that’s how you know you’re learning!”
